What Are Dental Crowns?

Dental crowns are tooth-shaped caps that are placed over existing teeth to add strength, restore function, and add beauty to your smile. They are used as a permanent way to protect cracked or chipped teeth or to change the shape, size, or strength of a tooth.

With dental crowns Woburn dental experts at Divine Smiles may suggest this approach to protect and strengthen teeth experiencing any of the following issues:

  • Weakened by decay
  • Vulnerable following a root canal
  • Chipped, cracked, or broken
  • Worn down
  • Disproportionate from the rest of your smile

Dental crowns may also be used as a restoration with dental bridges or implants. A dental bridge is an option for the replacement of missing teeth. In order to create stability for the bridge, dental crowns may be placed on either side of it. Dental implants are implanted into your jawbone and require a dental crown as the top portion of the implant so as to look and function like a real tooth.

Blends In Harmoniously

What are the benefits of Porcelain Dental Crowns?

Porcelain dental crowns are a compelling choice for dental restoration, offering a blend of aesthetics and functionality that's hard to beat. First and foremost, their natural appearance is a standout feature. Crafted from high-quality porcelain, these crowns seamlessly match the color and translucency of your natural teeth, ensuring a harmonious smile that doesn't draw attention. Beyond aesthetics, their durability is remarkable. Withstanding the daily demands of chewing and biting, porcelain crowns provide long-term support for weakened or damaged teeth, ensuring your investment pays off over time.

Moreover, porcelain dental crowns are biocompatible, meaning they're well-tolerated by the body, minimizing the risk of adverse reactions or allergies. Functionality is another key benefit. Porcelain crowns bolster the strength of compromised teeth, allowing for comfortable biting and chewing without discomfort. Maintenance is a breeze as well. Regular brushing, flossing, and dental check-ups are usually all that's needed to keep them in top-notch condition.

Same-Day Results

Dental Crown Procedure & CEREC Crowns

At Divine Smiles, we make use of the best available technology that exists for dentists today. Our dentist studied at the Las Vegas Institute for Advanced Dental Studies (LVI), which provided him with extensive training in dental technology. Using this training and his decades of experience, Dr. Clancy has implemented a same-day crown regimen at our dental office. Prior to placing your dental crown, your tooth will need to be prepared. Once your tooth has been prepared, we will use advanced dental technology to determine the exact size, shape, and color crown required.

We will then mill your crown with our CEREC (Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics) machine. This process takes only minutes and allows us to place a customized crown in a fraction of the time once required. In the past, dental crowns required at least two visits with several weeks in between so that the porcelain crown could be formed at an outside lab. With our in-house CEREC machine, our dentists can produce stunningly beautiful and functionally strong crowns in a single office visit. Your dental crown, once placed, will look, feel, and function exactly like your natural tooth. As an added benefit, porcelain is stain-resistant, which can help your crown maintain its appearance well into the future.

Long-Lasting

How Long Do Dental Crowns Last?

Typically, a porcelain crown will last between five and fifteen years. With good dental care and the proper brushing and flossing routine, dental crowns will last 15 years and even upwards of 20 years. With proper care, it is possible for a dental crown to last a lifetime, but rest assured that insurance companies will typically cover a dental crown replacement after five years, should your need arise.

How Should I Care for My Dental Crown?

A dental crown should be cared for just like the rest of your teeth. They need to be brushed at least twice per day and should be flossed once per day. Additionally, the following can help you protect your dental crown and make it last:

  • Ensure that you’re brushing and stimulating the gums directly surrounding your crown for health and circulation reasons
  • Try to avoid biting on objects that could harm or damage your crown, like ice or other hard objects
  • Do not use your teeth to open bottles or any other type of packaging
  • Do not clench your jaw or grind your teeth, and if you do, request a custom mouth guard from our Woburn and Winchester dentist

Dental Crowns Frequently Asked Questions

Dental crowns can be made out of stainless steel, gold, resin, or ceramic. They may also be a combination of porcelain-fused-to-metal. While these options are available, our Woburn and Winchester dentist chooses to make our crowns out of porcelain. Porcelain is beneficial because of the following:

  • Can be shaped, sized, and colored to match your adjacent teeth
  • Will fit perfectly with your smile and bite
  • Durable
  • Strong
  • Long-lasting
  • Won’t cause sensitivity issues, as metal crowns can

We offer a number of dental restorations, enabling our dentists to customize treatments for each patient. When a solution such as dental inlays and onlays or porcelain veneers can meet your needs, we may recommend one of these options. However, dental crowns offer advanced protection for damaged teeth and are often the most suitable solution. This will be based on your unique needs. Our dentist will take the time to discuss your particular needs with you and ensure that all your questions are answered prior to your appointment.

In order to place a dental crown, we must first remove the portion of your existing tooth that isn’t healthy. This may involve getting near the root, so we will provide you with a numbing agent to ensure that you don’t feel any pain. We want you to be as comfortable as possible during your procedure and will take all necessary steps to ensure this.

Once your porcelain crown has been placed, you may experience some minor sensitivity as your mouth and gums adjust to the new tooth, but this should dissipate within a day. After that, you shouldn’t experience any pain or sensitivity from your new dental crown.

When selecting a dentist for your dental crown procedure, you want a dentist who has a combination of extensive experience and a calming bedside manner.
