Full Face Orthodontics vs. Conventional Braces for Adults

As an adult seeking straighter teeth and an aligned bite, you have a lot of options these days. From conventional orthodontics to Invisalign®, you can find a method that meets your exact needs. Epigenetic orthodontics, also called full face orthodontics, present another opportunity. This type of orthodontia focuses on the development and alignment of the entire mid-face and the jaws, and not only the teeth alone. Dr. Ryan Clancy has completed specialized training in this method, and has years of experience utilizing it for patients who are good candidates.

What is Full Face Orthodontia?

This treatment focuses on the whole face, not just the teeth. It improves not only your smile, but also your facial shape, profile, jaw alignment and jaw size. It does so using a specialized appliance that looks like a retainer. The appliance stimulates your jaw to re-develop and remodel, thereby creating an ideal foundation in which straight, healthy teeth live.

Epigenetic orthodontics treat the foundation first, then focus on the alignment of the teeth. Many people have slightly underdeveloped mid-face bones and jaws. Some experts attribute it to the modern diet, but the main point is that an underdeveloped mid-face may not create enough space in the jaw for properly aligned teeth. Full face orthodontics triggers the jaw to develop, even in adulthood. The result is a spacious, healthy foundation for your teeth.

This treatment guides jaw development. It does not simply push teeth into straight alignment. Some of the many benefits of epigenetic orthodontia include:

  • Improved airway alignment
  • Optimal bite position
  • Attractive, aesthetically pleasing teeth

Dr. Clancy will make sure the jaw is correctly sized and positioned, which not only provides a beautiful smile foundation, but also ensures an unobstructed airway and a properly aligned spinal column.

Major Differences in Epigenetic Orthodontics

In general, epigenetic orthodontia treats the whole face, while other types of braces move the teeth and teeth roots alone. If you opt for traditional braces, you may have had a dentist recommend teeth extractions. This is often the default recommendation when there is not enough room in the jaw for all the teeth. On the other hand, full face ortho:

  • May prevent the need for teeth extractions by instead creating room for these teeth
  • Addresses narrow palates and/or narrow arches of teeth
  • Stimulates the generation of new cells in the jaw, even in adulthood

Dr. Clancy tells you more about this methodology and whether it can benefit you. He will examine your teeth and bite, and may take x-rays to get a detailed perspective. Then he can let you know whether full face orthodontia or another treatment is the right way to achieve the outcomes you want.
